Students from Xenia High School and coalition members from Nationwide Insurance, Greene Memorial and Soin Hospitals and Miami Valley Hospital
Injury Prevention also provided support. A crashed vehicle was provided by Moorman’s Towing of Xenia. The campaign runs from May 20 – June 2 and law enforcement will be heavily enforcing the use of seat belts throughout the county during this time. The coalition reminds all those traveling this Memorial Day weekend to Buckle Up… Every Trip, Every Time so that we all arrive alive.
Seat belt use in Greene County is on the decline from a baseline of 80% usage in 2010 to 77% during June 2011, and then to 74% during September 2011. That same year, of the 21,253 passenger vehicle occupants who were killed in motor vehicle crashes nationwide, 52 percent were NOT wearing seat belts at the time of their fatal crashes. In addition, our younger motorists are most at risk. Among teens and adults, ages 18-34, who were killed in fatal crashes in 2011, 64 percent were NOT buckled up at the time of the crash—the highest percentage of any age group.
