The Political Activist Who Founded Thanksgiving

I stand corrected. Thanksgiving was not founded by the Pilgrims, according to Kerry Messer. In her article “Meet the (Homeschool) Mother of Thanksgiving,” she presents the accomplishments of Sarah Josepha Hale. Not only did she write the book that influenced famous writers like Harriet Beecher Stowe, Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, Louisa May Alcott, and Washington Irving but also medical pioneers like Oliver Wendell Holmes, Florence Nightingale, and Elizabeth Blackwell. Although Thanksgiving was celebrated in different colonies and later states at vaiouus time throughout early America, it was Sarah Hale who convinced Abraham Lincoln to make it offical for the entire nation.
According to Wikipedia, Lincoln set the day of Thanksgiving as the last Thursday of November beginning in 1863.
